Technology upscaling, optimization and validation
Work Package 4 aims to demonstrate and assess the performance of Constructed Wetlands (CWs) at four sites in Greece, Egypt, Portugal, and Tunisia, integrating advanced CIRQUA technology. This includes using nanostructured filters and photocatalytic modules with automated remote control. Effluent quality will be analyzed for macronutrients, pollutants, and pathogens using advanced techniques. The impact on microbial communities and microplastics removal will be studied with NGS platforms and FT-IR/TOC methods. Bioprocess modeling will evaluate CW effectiveness, and energy audits will use the US EPA’s Energy Use Assessment Tool. Large-scale applications of biomass-derived nanostructured fertilizers will be tested in field and greenhouse conditions, assessing soil properties, microbial communities, crop productivity, and disease incidence. Precision agriculture models will be developed for optimal irrigation and fertilization. Key outcomes include demonstrating NBS technology, bioprocess simulations, in situ fertilizer evaluations, and precision agriculture models.
